  3. But the creative industry needs different tools to drive this systemic change. How can we power this movement? How can we own it?

Igniting social change, creating brands, campaigns and businesses with soul is Sian’s passion. Jolene Delisle

Founder & Creative Director or The Working Assembly

Breaking Down the Barriers in the Grocery Aisle: in a country where an estimated 40 percent of the population identifies as nonwhite, why do Americans still shop a single ethnic aisle for countless cultures and their products, and how do we train, excite and activate consumers to find and discover new brands outside of them?

KEY TAKEAWAYS

  • Bust the myth behind the ‘ethnic’ aisle, and share how we can shake up tired categories by debunking the tropes that paint the legacy of ‘exotic’ food brands as cheap, sugary, and processed.

  • What does radical inclusivity look like across packaging, and how can we create and share authentic stories that resonate both on the shelf and online?

  • Discuss the trappings (and advantages of) DTC and how to evolve our packaging design to work just as hard on the shelf as it does on Instagram

BRANDI PARKER

Head of Sustainability at Pearlfisher

Designing Despite Doomsday: We know that Design is Culture, and in this talk, I’ll share how design has shaped who we are— and how we’re lacking when it comes to making Sustainability an appealing part of culture. Motivating an entire population takes influence and ironically we live in the age of influencers— so how will we redesign our outlook and our motivations?

KEY TAKEAWAYS

  1. Design is great at influencing and becoming a big part of pop culture. This equals power in influence and sociocultural shifts.

  2. We can use the power of design to make sustainability feel like more than a passing fad.

  3. Redesign our mindsets required to shift behavior and lifestyle to make sustainability an embedded part of the lives we want to live.

As the Head of Sustainability at Pearlfisher New York, I pride myself on offering innovation and problem-solving, grounded in practicality, which comes from my many years of experience and expertise in technical realization.

Sustainability is fundamental to how Pearlfisher operates and creates, and is the foundation of the work of all of our teams. I challenge our designers to think about the end game at the start. I challenge our clients not to problem-solve based on ease, but on brand experience and environmental impact.

I firmly believe that the future of sustainable design does not just come down to materials – and managing waste – but implementing realistic and incremental change through a multi-disciplinary approach. By understanding changing culture, continuing to innovate with cutting-edge materials and processes, and joining this with the power of design, we can help change people’s behavior and encourage more sustainable actions and choices. This is where tangible, positive and long-term change will come from.

Outside of the Studio, my passion is music. I play the guitar and I write, perform and produce my own music across a range of outlets.
